The addition of Roy Oswalt is starting to pay dividends for the Philadelphia Phillies. Two more additions to the lineup this week could be just as key.
It's possible Chase Utley and Ryan Howard will return to face the San Francisco Giants during this three-game series, which begins Tuesday night with Oswalt looking to build on his first win with the Phillies.
Philadelphia (66-51) is hopeful Howard and Utley will be available at some point this week as it tries to continue putting pressure on Atlanta atop the NL East.Watch San Francisco Giants v Philadelphia Phillies live stream major league baseball online broadcast august 17
Howard, the team leader with 23 homers and 81 RBIs, is scheduled to come off the disabled list Tuesday, but soreness in his left ankle could cause a delay.
Utley, a five-time All-Star, is rehabbing from a thumb injury with Class-A Clearwater and could be back as early as Tuesday. He had a .277 average with 11 homers and 37 RBIs before undergoing surgery in June.
"I think he'll let us know," manager Charlie Manuel told the team's official website. "I trust him. I definitely think he'll be very truthful to us."
While the Phillies are concerned with Howard and Utley's health, Oswalt (7-13, 3.34 ERA) might be easing any worries about settling in with his new club.
The right-hander was acquired in a four-player trade from Houston on July 29, but needed three starts to get his first win for Philadelphia and he did it in impressive fashion.
Oswalt allowed five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of a 2-0 win over Los Angeles on Wednesday. He had been 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA in his two previous outings.
"I felt real good with my mechanics (Wednesday)," Oswalt said. "I felt strong. I was able to use my lower half most of the night to kind of carry me through."
Oswalt is 0-3 with a 3.15 ERA in three starts against the Giants this season, but those came with Houston and he was backed by only two total runs.
He'll be matched up with Barry Zito (8-6, 3.44) as this series between the NL wild-card leaders gets underway. Philadelphia is one percentage point ahead of San Francisco (67-52).
The Phillies, winners of 18 of 23 after beating New York 3-1 on Sunday, are beginning a 10-game homestand, and they've won 15 of 17 at Citizens Bank Park.
Philadelphia is 12-4 in its last 16 home meetings with the Giants but dropped two of three at San Francisco from April 26-28.
The Giants' rotation hasn't won a game since Aug. 3 by Jonathan Sanchez, who will start the series finale Thursday. Since Sanchez's victory, the starters are 0-7 with a 5.88 ERA in 12 games, with the club managing wins in five.
The offense of the second-place Giants also sputtered over the weekend, hitting .200 as they dropped two of three at home to NL West-leading San Diego.
San Francisco has scored just nine runs and batted .175 in its last five road games, losing four.
Zito is 0-4 with a 5.73 ERA in eight road starts since a 3-2 win at Florida on May 5.
The left-hander hasn't received much help in his last two, getting one total run of support while going 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA. He's won only once in his last 11 outings overall while getting an average of 2.3 runs of support.
He's won both of his starts at Philadelphia behind a 1.50 ERA, with the most recent coming June 4, 2007.
Zito wasn't sharp at home Wednesday, giving up four runs and 10 hits -- two homers -- in 6 1/3 innings while not getting a decision in a 5-4 win over Chicago.

The Florida Marlins' woes with runners in scoring position have continued, as has their losing streak.
The Marlins look to avoid dropping their fifth straight when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.
Florida (57-60) started its 10-game road trip with a three-game sweep of Washington, but then lost all three contests in Cincinnati before falling 7-1 to the Pirates in the series opener Monday.Watch Florida Marlins v Pittsburgh Pirates live stream major league baseball august 17
The Marlins went 0 for 27 with men in scoring position against the Reds and that trend continued Monday, when they went 0 for 6. Florida has scored seven runs during its four-game skid.
"I think we have the talent," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "I think (the players) know we should be out there performing better. But then again, I say this honestly, most of them are trying 100 percent."
The Marlins have struggled to find any consistency in their last 16 games. They won four in a row before their current slide, a surge that followed a five-game losing streak, which followed a three-game win streak.
"We have to take it upon ourselves as professionals and as a team to be more competitive, be more focused when we're playing and have more intensity," second baseman Dan Uggla said. "We've got to bounce back, even if something may not go right early on in a game."
Uggla and rookie Mike Stanton have been the only bright spots in the Marlins' lineup of late, combining for four of the club's five hits Monday.
Stanton is 15 for 27 with four homers and five doubles during the trip. Rodriguez moved him into the fifth spot in the lineup Sunday.
"More frequently, he's going to have runners in scoring position," Rodriguez told the team's official website. "So the pitchers will approach him differently. We'll see how he handles it."
Uggla, 12 for 27 with eight RBIs on the trip, is 5 for 11 against Pirates scheduled starter Zach Duke (5-11, 5.20 ERA).
Duke has gone 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA in his last three starts, giving up three runs in six innings of a 3-0 loss to San Diego on Thursday. The left-hander is 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA in five career starts versus Florida.
Ricky Nolasco (13-8, 4.39) will try to help the Marlins snap a five-game losing streak at PNC Park. Florida has gone 7-19 in its last 26 at Pittsburgh (40-78).
The right-hander pitched six innings in a 5-0 victory over the Nationals on Thursday. He has gone 8-2 with a 3.76 ERA in his last 10 starts.
Nolasco bounced back from a rough outing in his previous start Aug. 6, when he gave up seven runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 7-0 loss to St. Louis. He is 2/3 with a 2.45 ERA in seven games -- five starts -- versus Pittsburgh.

The Boston Red Sox have no idea how much having second baseman Dustin Pedroia back will help, but they're ecstatic the former MVP is ready for the season's stretch run.
Pedroia is expected to be removed from the disabled list Tuesday and start for the Red Sox as they go for an eighth straight win over the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of this three-game series at Fenway Park.Watch Los Angeles Angels v Boston Red Sox live stream major league baseball online broadcast august 17.
With Pedroia sidelined since June 25 with a fractured bone in his left foot, Boston (67-52) went 23-21 without the 2008 AL MVP and lost ground to the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East race. With the club battling key injuries all year, including Kevin Youkilis being out for the season, the Red Sox could use a boost as they chase a fourth straight postseason appearance.
Manager Terry Francona, though, doesn't want to put too much emphasis on a player who has gone nearly eight weeks without facing major league pitching.
"I don't know (what Pedroia's return will mean). How do you know?" Francona told the Red Sox's official website. ".. If he goes 0-for-40, not much. The idea is, he's a great player, so we're thrilled. So we don't know how it affects the games because the games aren't played yet."
Right-hander Clay Buchholz (13-5, 2.49 ERA), who will start the series opener, is expecting big things from the energetic second baseman.
"He's definitely a spark plug for the offense and defense," Buchholz said of Pedroia, batting .292 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs. "He's just a key component to this team. Once he gets back and gets his feel back and everything, he's definitely going to be fun to watch, but he's going to help us out also."
Ranked among the league leaders in ERA and tied with fellow All-Star Jon Lester for the team high in victories, Buchholz has more than done his part to improve the Red Sox's playoff chances. He's 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA in his last four outings.
"I've definitely exceeded anything I thought I'd be able to do in this game so far this year," he said after throwing eight innings of one-run ball in Wednesday's 10-1 win at Toronto.
The right-hander has won both of his starts against the Angels (60-59) this year and Boston has won all seven matchups, including four at Fenway from May 3-6.
Trailing AL West-leading Texas by a wide margin, the Angels likely need another solid performance from ace Jered Weaver (11-7, 2.87) if they're going to post their first win over Boston since sweeping last year's AL division series.
Weaver, 2-0 with an 0.83 ERA in three starts this month, went a season-high eight innings in Wednesday's 2-1, 10-inning victory over Kansas City. He had 11 strikeouts to raise his major league-leading total to 182.
"Weave's stuff wasn't as crisp as we've seen it, but it was his best job of pitching all season," manager Mike Scioscia said.
The right-hander, though, is 1-1 with a 7.06 ERA in four career starts in Boston.
Buchholz is 4-0 with a 1.53 ERA in his last five outings at Fenway.
Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew, batting .333 with four homers and six RBIs during a six-game hitting streak, is 6 for 17 with a homer lifetime against Weaver.
Angels outfielder Torii Hunter is 3 for 16 without an RBI in his last four games, and he's 2 for 23 with eight strikeouts versus Boston in 2010. Hunter has one hit in nine career at-bats against Buchholz.

The Atlanta Braves have been in first place in the NL East since May 31, but they have a losing record against the last-place Washington Nationals.
The Braves will try to change that Tuesday night when rookie Mike Minor makes his home debut in the opener of a three-game set.Watch Washington Nationals v Atlanta Braves live stream major league baseball online broadcast august 17
Atlanta (69-49) is 4-5 against Washington (51-67) thanks in part to the struggles of its RBI leaders. Troy Glaus is 4 for 32 with two of his team-high 69 RBIs against the Nationals while Brian McCann is 6 for 27 with two of his 63 RBIs.
Glaus is 2 for 14 against Nationals starter Scott Olsen (3-4, 5.11 ERA) while McCann is 6 for 23, but the focus on the mound Tuesday will be on Minor (0-0, 4.50).
Minor made his major league debut last Monday at Houston and allowed four runs in six innings in a 10-4 loss. The 22-year-old left-hander -- the seventh overall pick in the 2009 draft -- was starting in place of Kris Medlen, who is on the disabled list with a right elbow injury.
"There was excitement, nerves, but not too much," Minor said. "I felt pretty comfortable out there. I know there are good guys out there and a really good guy behind the plate. After that first pitch, I was good."
Minor went 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Gwinnett before being called up.
Atlanta increased its lead to 2 1/2 games in the division over Philadelphia with a dramatic victory Monday. Melky Cabrera's two-run single off Octavio Dotel with the bases loaded in the ninth inning capped a three-run rally in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"We don't give up," shortstop Alex Gonzalez said. "We've got a good offense. All those guys took great at-bats."
Rookie Jason Heyward returned after missing a game with swelling in his right knee. Heyward went 0 for 3 to drop to 6 for 46 over his last 13 games.
The Braves lost both of Olsen's starts against them this year, with the left-hander going 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA. Those contests were at Nationals Park, and Olsen is 1/3 with a 7.15 ERA in seven career outings at Turner Field.
Olsen turned in his shortest outing since July 8, 2007, on Wednesday by allowing seven runs over 1 2/3 innings in a 9-5 home loss to Florida.
"I made terrible pitches. You make bad pitches, they hit 'em. That's what happened," Olsen said.
The Nationals took two of three at home over the weekend from Arizona, winning 5-3 on Sunday after entering the series with five straight losses.
"We needed to win a series," outfielder Josh Willingham told the Nationals' official website. "It has been a while. So we hope to keep that going in Atlanta."
Shortstop Ian Desmond is 9 for 26 with three homers and six RBIs against the Braves this year. Desmond leads the majors with 27 errors.

A strong start to their homestand has helped the Tampa Bay Rays move into a tie atop the AL East.
Looking for a fourth straight victory, the Rays hope to fare better than the last time they faced Texas' Tommy Hunter when they continue their series with the Rangers on Tuesday night.
Just off the disabled list, Carlos Pena hit a tiebreaking single to highlight a four-run eighth inning as Tampa Bay (72-46) beat Cliff Lee and the first-place Rangers 6-4 on Monday.Watch Texas Rangers vs Tampa Bay Rays live stream major league baseball august 17
The Rays have won five of seven since a season-high five-game skid, pulling even with New York when the Yankees lost Monday.
Tampa Bay, 3-1 on its six-game homestand, has won 11 of 14 at home over Texas (67-50), which has an eight-game lead in the West despite losing five of eight.
The Rangers, however, appear to have a good chance to even this series with Hunter (9-1, 3.38 ERA) on the mound. The right-hander began the season on the disabled list with an oblique strain, then pitched a five-hitter to beat the Rays 6-1 in his 2010 debut June 5.
Hunter, 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA in three starts against Tampa Bay, has gone 1-1 with an 8.76 ERA in his last three overall. Flu-like symptoms knocked him out after he allowed four runs on solo homers in three innings of a 10-9, 11-inning win over Boston on Friday.
"I don't know what happened," said Hunter, one win away from a career high.
Tampa Bay's Matt Garza (11-7, 3.92) is also looking to establish a career high for victories, but he's gone 0-2 with a 3.05 ERA in three starts since his no-hitter against Detroit on July 26.
The Rays totaled seven runs in those three outings. Garza allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 3-2 road loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.
"He's an excellent pitcher," manager Joe Maddon told the Rays' official website. "We have underachieved as an offense this year."
Garza, 4-3 with a 4.53 ERA in eight starts versus the Rangers, gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 9-5 win at Arlington on June 6. He has gone 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in three home starts against Texas.
He won't have to face Nelson Cruz after the former All-Star was placed on the disabled list with a strained hamstring Monday. Third baseman Michael Young could also sit out after leaving Monday's contest with a stiff neck.
Elvis Andrus and Bengie Molina each had two hits and an RBI in the opener for the Rangers, who have dropped three straight on the road. Andrus is 6 for 16 with four RBIs against the Rays this season.
Pena, who saw his first action since July 31, has batted .320 with eight RBIs in his last seven games against Texas. His two hits in eight at-bats against Hunter were home runs.

The San Diego Padres were a good team without Miguel Tejada. They've been even better with him contributing in a big way offensively.
Tejada looks to continue his hot stretch as the NL West-leading Padres go for a third straight victory Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The 36-year-old shortstop went 4 for 5 with two RBIs as San Diego (70-47) won for the seventh time in eight games, 9-5 over the Cubs on Monday.Watch San Diego Padres vs Chicago Cubs live stream major league baseball online broadcast 17/8
Since going 1 for 10 in his first three games after being acquired from Baltimore last month, Tejada has batted .351 in 13 contests, including 9 for 14 with four RBIs in his last three. He is a lifetime .324 hitter against the Cubs.
"I think we've all seen Miggie now," manager Bud Black said. "He's a professional hitter. Really knows his swing. He has a great approach. Hits all pitches and hits good pitching."
A major-league leading 3.23 ERA has been the key to the Padres' success this season. Jon Garland (11-8, 3.41 ERA) looks to build on his latest strong outing when he takes the mound Tuesday.
The right-hander allowed one hit and struck out five in six innings of a 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday, matching his win total from last season. The veteran has posted a 2.95 ERA in his last six outings.
"Jon knows how to work his way through a lineup," Black said.
Kosuke Fukudome had three hits and two RBIs on Monday for the Cubs (50-69), who have dropped 15 of 19.
"This is not what we expected out of this team," losing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny said. "This is an unfortunate year but there is still a lot of good things that can be done from this team."
Fukudome has batted .321 with six RBIs in his last seven games. He is a lifetime .315 hitter versus San Diego.
Randy Wells (5-10, 4.60) tries to avoid a fourth straight loss when he takes the ball for the Cubs. The right-hander allowed seven runs in five innings Thursday but did not get the decision in an 8-7 loss at San Francisco.
"I've got no explanation for you. It's pretty cut and dry," Wells' told the Cubs' official website. "I can't keep putting the team in a hole like that. It's not professional, it's not acceptable. Just chalk it up to a bad day and move on."
Wells has gone 0-3 with a 7.48 ERA in his last four starts. He allowed three runs and struck out seven in seven innings of a 3-1 loss in his only appearance against the Padres on May 23, 2009.
San Diego is 2-6 at Wrigley Field since the start of the 2008 season.

Faced with another setback, the New York Mets are doing their best to focus on winning games. Sending ace Johan Santana to the mound should help.
Without their star closer, Santana and the Mets try for a seventh consecutive win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.
Hours after learning Francisco Rodriguez will miss the rest of the season with a torn thumb ligament, New York (59-59) scored twice in the ninth inning to beat Houston 3-1 on Monday. With outfielder Jason Bay (concussion) and catcher Rod Barajas (oblique) on the disabled list, the team announced Rodriguez will need surgery after suffering the injury during a fight with his girlfriend's father at Citi Field last week.
"We've just been through a lot," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. "We seem to continue to have difficulties keeping things from -- having these type of injuries or these type of setbacks."
Santana (10-6, 2.89 ERA) is dealing with his own personal issues. A Florida woman who accused him of rape sued Santana in Lee County, Fla., after authorities declined to prosecute the case. However, he will try to win his third straight start Tuesday.
"Every time we go out there, we go out there with the mentality of winning," Santana told the Mets' official website.
The left-hander has allowed nine hits without a run over 16 1/3 innings of his last two starts. Santana, who tossed a four-hitter and struck out 10 in a 4-0 win over Colorado on Thursday, is 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA in nine starts.
"(It's) fun to watch him pitch," teammate Angel Pagan said.
Santana is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in three starts against Houston.
David Wright had three hits and former Astro Carlos Beltran had two with a homer Monday for the Mets, who haven't won two straight on the road since a seven-game streak June 11-18.
Though Beltran has two home runs in 29 games this season, he is 8 for 18 in his last five contests. He is batting .319 with three home runs and seven RBIs in his last 11 at Minute Maid Park, where he spent part of 2004 playing for the Astros.
The Mets face former teammate Nelson Figueroa (3-1, 3.38) on Tuesday when he makes his second start of the season and first since the Astros acquired him off waivers last month.
The right-hander, 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in eight appearances with Houston, was scheduled to start last Saturday but was pushed back after he underwent an arteriogram due to migraine headaches.
"Everything checked out OK," Figueroa told the Astros' official website. "They just felt it was better to be on the safe side."
Figueroa went 4-11 with a 4.53 ERA in 16 starts for the Mets in 2008-2009, but they designated him for assignment out of spring training in April.
Chris Johnson had two hits with an RBI on Monday for the Astros (51-66), who have scored nine total runs during their six-game skid against the Mets. The rookie third baseman is hitting .384 with 33 RBIs in 44 games since being recalled from the minors June 22.
Second baseman Jeff Keppinger -- a former Met -- is likely out of the lineup after spraining his left big toe Monday.

Cleveland Indians right-hander Jeanmar Gomez knew he was heading back to the minors prior to making his major league debut last month. The way Gomez has been performing, he might not have to worry about a return to Triple-A.

Before making his major league debut against Detroit on July 18 in a spot start for Justin Masterson, Gomez (3-0, 1.54 ERA) was told he was returning to the minors after that game, in which he allowed two unearned runs and five hits over seven innings to beat the Tigers 7-2.
Gomez was recalled Aug. 1 and is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA in three starts this month.
The 22-year-old gave up one run over six innings of Thursday's 4-1 win over Baltimore, setting a franchise record for lowest ERA through his first four career starts. Manager Manny Acta is more than impressed with how Gomez, the youngest player on a club with nine rookies, has responded to major league hitters.
"For his age, his composure is above-average," Acta told MLB's official website. "... He hasn't been intimidated by anything up here so far. There are times out there when he looks like he's probably better off down there developing, but he's pitched well four times for us now."
Gomez will try to help the Indians (49-69) win consecutive games for the first since taking three straight July 31-Aug. 2. They ended a 3-6 homestand with Sunday's 9-1 win over Seattle as designated hitter Travis Hafner returned from the disabled list and hit his 11th career grand slam during a seven-run seventh inning.
"There's not a whole lot of experience on our team right now," Hafner told the Indians' official website. "If I'm feeling healthy, I wanted to get back as fast as I could. They left it up to me, and I just wanted to get back."
Hafner has plenty of experience against Tuesday's scheduled starter Zack Greinke (7-11, 3.99), going 11 for 35 with a homer and 12 strikeouts.
The Royals (49-69), who have won five of seven at Kauffman Stadium, will look for a strong performance from the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner as they continue their 10-game homestand.
Greinke, though, is 5-5 with a 4.79 ERA in 12 home starts this season. The right-hander went 10-3 with a 1.70 ERA in 17 starts at Kauffman Stadium in 2009.
After going 1-2 with an 8.05 ERA in his previous three starts, Greinke allowed one run over eight innings in Wednesday's 2-1, 10-inning road loss to Los Angeles.
Greinke struck out eight and yielded three runs over six innings of a 6-4 win against Cleveland on May 13 to move to 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in his last four starts versus the Indians at Kauffman Stadium.
He'll be trying to slow down Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who has four consecutive two-hit games and is batting .314 this month. Cabrera is 11 for 24 lifetime against Greinke.
Royals shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who is 6 for 19 with five RBIs in five games against Cleveland this season, is batting .419 with three homers and six RBIs in his last nine games.
Beginning Tuesday, Cleveland and Kansas City meet 13 times in the final seven weeks of the season.

The Minnesota Twins wasted no time building their lead atop the AL Central after taking first place from the Chicago White Sox in their previous series.
The Twins will try to further pad their advantage as the teams open a three-game set Tuesday night at Target Field.
Minnesota (68-50) is a major league-best 17-4 since July 24, winning seven of eight to move three games ahead of Chicago (65-53). The Twins took two of three at U.S. Cellular Field last week after they entered the series tied for first.Watch Chicago White Sox vs Minnesota Twins live stream mlb online broadcast august 17 2010
"It should be fun, I think that's what baseball's about," Jim Thome told the Twins' official website. "It makes it fun for each city to root for both teams. I know our fans will be excited."
Minnesota's play at home is a big reason for its run. The club has won seven straight at Target Field, sweeping Oakland there over the weekend.
The Twins are 4-2 at home against Chicago, taking the last three matchups.
On Sunday, Kevin Slowey didn't allow a hit through seven innings but was pulled to start the eighth, while Thome hit a three-run homer in the seventh en route to a 4-2 victory.
Slowey, who missed his previous start because of elbow tendinitis, had thrown 106 pitches.
"I would boo me too," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I took a pitcher out with a no-hitter going. But I would do it 1,000 times the same way."
Slowey didn't get a chance to complete a no-hitter, but he continued the Twins' pitching dominance at home. They've allowed eight runs in the last seven home games, and opponents are batting .188 in that span.
Scott Baker (10-9, 4.76 ERA) will try to extend the trend for Minnesota, which hasn't won eight in a row at home since April 19-May 9, 2008.
Baker beat the White Sox on Tuesday for his third straight win. He gave up five runs in six innings of a 12-6 win to improve to 2-0 against them this year and 6-3 over his career.
Chicago's John Danks (12-8, 3.19), however, has been just as tough.
Danks has won five of his last six decisions and has a 1.93 ERA over his last five starts. The left-hander allowed one run in eight innings of a 6-1 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday.
"I hate pitching against this team, I'm not going to lie to you," said Danks, who is 6-6 with a 5.01 ERA lifetime against the Twins.
Michael Cuddyer, who is 20 for 41 lifetime against Danks, is 4 for 11 against him this year.
Chicago dropped two of three to Detroit at home, losing 13-8 on Sunday.
J.J. Putz blew a save for a second straight game, giving up three runs in the eighth after his team rallied from a 5-1 deficit.
Chicago's bullpen, which is without injured closer Bobby Jenks (back spasms), has a 7.06 ERA over the last seven games and had to pitch more than two innings in five of those games.
"To me, a very bad homestand," manager Ozzie Guillen told the White Sox's official website. "Very bad pitching. When we pitch well, we're not hitting. That makes a combination for a very poor homestand. We've got to prepare better for the next road trip and play better, there's no doubt."

Just days ago, the St. Louis Cardinals were brimming with confidence and looked like the favorite to win the NL Central after pulling off a convincing sweep to vault into first place.
Repeating as division champs no longer looks so simple.
Back in second place, the Cardinals try to avoid losing three straight for the first time in more than three weeks when they open a two-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.Watch Milwaukee Brewers vs St. Louis Cardinals live stream mlb online broadcast august 17
With last week's emphatic sweep in Cincinnati, St. Louis (65-51) made up three games in the standings to take a one-game lead over the Reds. It seemed to represent a shift of power within the division, but the veteran Cardinals were unable to carry any momentum into a weekend series against lowly Chicago.
By losing two of three to the Cubs coupled with Cincinnati's three-game sweep of Florida, St. Louis has dropped a game off the pace.
"It's not over," manager Tony La Russa said after Sunday's 9-7 defeat. "It's going to be a contest to the end."
The Cardinals, who haven't dropped three in a row since July 22-24, hope to regroup against a Brewers team they're 6-4 against this year. Albert Pujols is hitting only .278 in those 10 games but has six home runs and 14 RBIs.
Pujols has been putting up similarly gaudy numbers lately. The NL's two-time reigning MVP, who became the first player to hit 30 homers in his first 10 seasons with a solo shot Sunday, is batting .455 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs in his last 13 games.
"I don't know how long he has to play to be one of the greatest that's ever played this game," La Russa said. "But he's certainly going to be in the conversation."
Pujols is 5 for 12 with two doubles since 2008 against scheduled starter Dave Bush (5-10, 4.78 ERA), who is coming off a disastrous outing.
In Wednesday's 8-2 loss to Arizona, Bush gave up four consecutive home runs in a 10-pitch span in the fourth inning and allowed seven runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander has a 7.52 ERA in his last five starts after posting a 2.39 ERA in his previous six.
Trying to turn things around at Busch Stadium might not be easy for Bush, who has recorded a 10.57 ERA in losing all three starts there.
In his only start of the season against the Cardinals on April 9 at Miller Park, Bush didn't receive a decision after allowing three runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-4 loss.
The Cardinals counter with Jaime Garcia (10-5, 4.78), who gave up four runs, two hits and matched a season worst with five walks in 5 1/3 innings of an 8-4 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday. The left-hander has yielded at least four runs in each of his last two starts after giving up that many in just two of his previous 17.
Garcia is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three starts against Milwaukee this season.
The Brewers (55-64) arrive in St. Louis after Sunday's 6-5 loss in Colorado, their fifth defeat in seven games.
Second baseman Rickie Weeks went 8 for 13 with four doubles in the series at Coors Field. He's hitting .290 with four home runs in his last eight games against the Cardinals.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies finished first and second in the NL West last season to both reach the playoffs. A year later, they are struggling to stay in contention.
The division rivals open a three-game set at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, as the Dodgers look to continue their recent dominance of the Rockies.
Los Angeles (60-59) won 95 games to capture the West in 2009, with Colorado (61-56) finishing three games back to take the wild card.Watch Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers live stream mlb online broadcast august 17 2010
One year later, first-place San Diego leads the third-place Rockies by nine games and the fourth-place Dodgers by 11. Three clubs are ahead of both teams for the wild card.
Los Angeles is 27-15 against division foes, and 18-6 against Colorado since the start of last season. The Dodgers won four of six meetings in May, including two victories by Tuesday's starter Clayton Kershaw (10-7, 3.17 ERA).
Kershaw posted a 1.38 ERA in those games, and enters with a 22-inning scoreless streak at home against Colorado. He has struck out 25 in that span while yielding eight hits and 14 walks.
The left-hander is 0-2 with a 4.58 ERA in his last three outings. Kershaw gave up two runs over 6 2/3 innings and did not get a decision in a 10-9 loss at Philadelphia on Thursday.
He outdueled Jhoulys Chacin (5-8, 4.04) on May 30 in a 4-3 road victory by allowing two runs over five innings while Chacin gave up four in 5 1-3. Chacin beat the Dodgers on May 8, yielding six hits over 7 1/3 innings in an 8-0 rout at Los Angeles.
The right-hander is taking the place of Jeff Francis, who was placed on the disabled list Saturday with left shoulder soreness. Chacin was sent to Triple-A Colorado Springs on July 24 after going 5-7 with a 3.64 ERA in 12 starts before being demoted to the bullpen after a July 2 outing against San Francisco.
Los Angeles dropped five of six to end a seven-game road trip, and was stifled in a four-game series against Atlanta. The Dodgers totaled six runs to lose three of four, blowing a two-run, ninth-inning lead in Monday night's 4-3 loss.
Colorado has been a different team at home and on the road. The Rockies lead the majors with a .298 home average at hitter-friendly Coors Field, and are one of the worst teams in the majors on the road at .232.
Troy Tulowitzki's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Colorado to a 6-5 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. Second baseman Clint Barmes' error in the top half of the inning allowed the tying run to score with two outs.
"The statement of the club to come back and do what it did, and pick up an incredible teammate speaks volumes as to who they are and what they've been about for a long period of time," manager Jim Tracy told the Rockies' official website.

The Toronto Blue Jays are hoping Brandon Morrow can benefit from an extended break as he tries to follow up on a masterful performance.
It's taken nearly three months and a trip to the disabled list for Oakland Athletics starter Dallas Braden to get back on track after his perfect game.
In his return to his native area, Morrow will try to extend his career-best win streak to five while Braden will attempt to earn his fourth win in five starts Tuesday night.Watch Toronto Blue Jays vs Oakland Athletics live stream mlb online broadcasting 17/8
Morrow (9-6, 4.45 ERA) finished one out shy of a no-hitter Aug. 8 and struck out 17 on 137 pitches during a 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay. In response to that effort, Blue Jays (63-55) manager Cito Gaston skipped the right-hander's scheduled start.
"I was drained. After the game, I had a tough time sleeping that night just based on my mind racing and everything else," Morrow told the team's website. "I've been feeling pretty good for the last couple days. It's nice to have that time off."
Morrow, who has a 2.96 ERA, 40 strikeouts and 10 walks over his last four starts, will try to follow another one-hitter from Monday's series opener. Shaun Marcum allowed only Conor Jackson's home run in a 3-1 victory, the team's 22nd in 34 games.
Morrow, a Santa Rosa, Calif., native who also pitched at Cal, will try to follow by improving to 4-0 all-time against the A's (57-60). He allowed two runs over six innings in a 10-2 home victory April 30, and three runs and two hits over 6 1/3 innings in his only previous start in Oakland on Sept. 21, 2008, while not receiving a decision for Seattle.
Braden (7-8, 3.56), meanwhile, will try to help his team avoid matching its longest losing streak of the season. The A's haven't dropped five in a row since May 12-16.
The left-hander is 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA since being activated from the disabled list July 20. He's also recorded two complete games in his last three outings, including Wednesday's 5-1 win at Seattle.
Braden gave up four hits and two walks while striking out six in that victory, his third since throwing the 19th perfect game in major league history May 9 against Tampa Bay. He followed that outing by dropping five consecutive decisions before going on the DL with soreness in his pitching elbow.
"He's just sharp mentally and physically right now," manager Bob Geren said.
Braden is facing the Blue Jays for the first time this season and is 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA in three career starts against them. He won his previous matchup at home on July 31, 2009, despite allowing five runs over 6 2/3 innings.
This time, he'll have to contend with a red-hot Jose Bautista, who homered for 11th time in 21 games Monday. The major league's home run leader (37) is 2 for 6 against Braden but has never taken the left-hander deep.
Bautista has homered in 12 of the Blue Jays' past 13 series.

A heartbreaking sweep that knocked the Cincinnati Reds out of the top spot in the NL Central last week was expected to have a drastic effect on their mindset and playoff outlook.
The club is proving it won't be going down lightly.
Back atop the division, the rejuvenated Reds look to win their fourth in a row when they open a nine-game road trip Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the teams' first meeting of the season.Watch Cincinnati Reds vs Arizona Diamondbacks live stream mlb online broadcasting august 17
In last week's highly anticipated home series against St. Louis, Cincinnati (67-51) was outscored 21-8 in losing all three games to go from leading the division by two to trailing the Cardinals by one. The empathic sweep seemed to signal a turning point, but the Reds are refusing to concede.
Cincinnati bounced back by sweeping a three-game series from Florida to retake a one-game lead over St. Louis, which lost two of three to Chicago over the weekend.
"We lose one, two or three games, and the young kids are learning how to come back from that," Miguel Cairo said after Sunday's 2-0 win over the Marlins. "It's already in the past."
The Reds, who have the NL's second-best road record at 31-25, now look to keep it going with a trip out west.
Cincinnati outscored the Diamondbacks 26-9 in sweeping a three-game series in Arizona last season and has won five straight there. The trip will get much tougher with stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where the Reds are a combined 7-19 since 2006.
"It's a law-of-averages road trip for us going west after all these years," said manager Dusty Baker, whose Reds have won seven of eight on the road.
To kick off the trip, Baker will turn to Bronson Arroyo (12-7, 3.94 ERA), who is 4-1 with a 1.60 ERA in his last six starts away from Cincinnati.
Arroyo hadn't allowed an earned run in 18 consecutive innings before giving up a two-out grand slam to Colby Rasmus in the fifth of Wednesday's 6-1 loss to St. Louis. The right-hander departed after five, having allowed six hits and four runs -- just the second time in eight starts he yielded more than three.
Arroyo went 1-1 with a 7.30 ERA in two outings against the Diamondbacks last year. The Reds were 5-1 in the season series as Joey Votto, currently the NL's top hitter at .322, was 9 for 19 with four RBIs.
Arizona (47-72) is returning from a 4-3 road trip capped by Sunday's 5-3 loss to Washington. The Diamondbacks dropped two of three to the Nationals to lose their first series since being swept by Philadelphia from July 27-29.
"I'd like to be 7-0. I guess it's an improvement," interim manager Kirk Gibson said. "We're playing better."
The arrival of Daniel Hudson (3-0, 1.59) is one reason the Diamondbacks are faring better.
Hudson, who will make his first appearance against the Reds, has yielded four total runs while throwing at least seven innings in winning each of his three starts for Arizona since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox.
In Wednesday's 8-2 win over Milwaukee, Hudson gave up two runs and seven hits while striking out a career-best nine in seven innings. After giving up back-to-back homers to open the second inning, the right-hander settled down and ended up retiring 16 of the final 20 batters he faced.
"I thought he showed good composure coming back," Gibson told the Diamondbacks' official website. "He was in a couple situations there, where you can see again he has great composure. He makes his pitches when he has to and he gets out of it."

Neither Justin Verlander nor CC Sabathia shined when the aces dueled in AL Central matchups. Since Sabathia joined the New York Yankees, Verlander has outpitched him in head-to-head matchups.
They will meet for the second time this season Tuesday night when Verlander's Detroit Tigers continue a four-game road series against the Yankees, who could be without Alex Rodriguez.
These aces met four times when Sabathia (15-5, 3.14 ERA) was with Cleveland, and neither pitched particularly well. Verlander (13-7, 3.72) went 2-1 with a 5.12 ERA, and Sabathia was 2-2 with a 6.66 ERA in those games. Watch Detroit Tigers vs New York Yankees live stream major league baseball august 17
Verlander is 4-2 with a 3.63 ERA in seven career outings against New York (72-46), including 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA in three when opposing Sabathia. The Yankees ace is 1-2 with a 4.29 ERA in those starts, including a 6-0 loss May 13 in which he gave up six runs over six innings while Verlander was sharp in 6 2/3 innings.
New York captain Derek Jeter is 7 for 18 against Verlander, but Yankees hitters batting left-handed haven't fared as well. Nick Swisher is 7 for 38, Mark Teixeira 1 for 14 and Robinson Cano 4 for 17 against the right-hander.
Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, meanwhile, is 7 for 11 with two homers and nine RBIs against Sabathia.
Sabathia has won two straight, and fell one out shy of a complete game Thursday after allowing three runs in a 4-3 victory at Kansas City.
The left-hander -- tied with Tampa Bay's David Price and Minnesota's Carl Pavano for the AL lead in victories -- is 13-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last 18 regular-season home starts. That streak began when he outdueled Verlander with seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory July 18, 2009.
Verlander is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in his last three road starts. He won Wednesday against Tampa Bay by yielding one run over six innings in a 3-2 victory.
The Tigers All-Star could be facing a depleted lineup. Rodriguez left Monday's 3-1 loss after the fourth inning with tightness in his left calf, and is listed as day to day.
"Would I be a little surprised if he played tomorrow?" manager Joe Girardi said. "Yes, but not completely."
Swisher came out in the sixth with tightness in his right forearm, and Lance Berkman missed the game with a right ankle injury suffered Sunday at Kansas City. Both are day to day.
The Yankees have totaled eight hits in consecutive losses, and dropped into a tie for first place in the AL East with the Rays.
"Not swinging the bats like we'd like to," Jeter said.
Detroit (58-60) is on its first three-game win streak since a five-game run July 5-10. Johnny Damon went 0 for 3 in his return to the Bronx, receiving a standing ovation before his first at-bat after spending the previous four seasons with the Yankees.
Cabrera homered for the second straight game to give him 96 RBIs -- one fewer than Rodriguez's major league lead.
Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson went 3 for 3 in his first game against his former team. Granderson played his first six seasons with the Tigers.

In their return home, the Baltimore Orioles ended their first losing streak under Buck Showalter. The Orioles are hoping Kevin Millwood can follow suit to end his lengthy winless drought.
Facing the Seattle Mariners, however, may not help the right-hander's chances to accomplish that feat.
Millwood will try to earn his first victory in nearly two months when the teams continue a three-game series at Camden Yards on Tuesday night.
Baltimore (42-77) showcased some of its newfound resilience and improved to 10-4 under Showalter with Monday night's 5-4 comeback victory in 11 innings. After falling behind in the 10th, the Orioles benefited from a bases-loaded walk to tie the game again. Adam Jones then bunted home Nick Markakis with two outs in the following inning.Watch Seattle Mariners v Baltimore Orioles live stream major league baseball online broadcast 17/8
"I don't know if I've ever seen a game won in that style before," pitcher Brad Bergesen said. "It took a lot of guts."
Following consecutive defeats to end a 3-3 road trip, Baltimore bounced back for its seventh victory in eight home games since Showalter took over Aug. 3. The victory was also its eighth in 11 home matchups with the Mariners (46-73).
Millwood (2-12, 5.74 ERA) hasn't been as successful in his last 10 games against Seattle, going 1-8 with a 6.31 ERA. He's 0-1 with a 5.52 ERA in this season's two meetings and gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings to the Mariners at Camden Yards on May 13 before the Orioles rallied for a 6-5 win.
Millwood enters this matchup 0-4 with a 7.18 ERA since beating Florida at home June 24, but has a 2.77 ERA over his last two starts. He allowed three runs over seven innings Thursday in Cleveland but absorbed a 4-1 defeat.
"He pitched well enough for us to win, that goes without saying," Showalter told the team's website. "That's the Kevin I remember. He kept us in the ballgame and didn't give in."
Another defeat Tuesday would tie Millwood with Houston's Roy Oswalt for the major league lead in losses.
The Mariners will attempt to extend Millwood's misery by helping Luke French (1-3, 4.96) bounce back from his second loss since being recalled from the minors. They'll need better clutch hitting after going 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position and stranding 12 on Monday.
"We had opportunities to score more runs and didn't do it," interim manager Daren Brown said. "Came back to bite up there at the end."
The left-hander, who has never faced Baltimore, is 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA in his three starts since July 28, and gave up four runs over six innings in Wednesday's 5-1 defeat to Oakland.
Seattle, which is 4-3 since Brown took over for the fired Don Wakamatsu on Aug. 9, is trying to avoid its first loss in the past four series. The Mariners, however, are also 4-15 on the road since June 30.
