After Wednesday's bullpen implosion pushed the relief corps' ERA to a major league-worst 6.29, the Diamondbacks (47-74) would appreciate a strong start from Joe Saunders (1-2, 3.86 ERA). The left-hander gave up four runs and 10 hits over six innings in a 4-2 loss at Washington on Friday.

Saunders has never faced Cincinnati.

The Reds give the ball to Travis Wood (3-1, 2.65), who was sent to Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 9, a day after winning his third straight start. The move was designed to keep the rookie left-hander's innings down, and he pitched just two innings during his stop in the minors.

He held the Cubs hitless into the sixth Aug. 8, ultimately allowing four runs over 6 1/3 innings of an 11-4 win. All of Wood's victories have come on the road, where he has thrown 45 of his 51 major league innings.

"He's tough," Cubs second baseman Jeff Baker said. "We saw his numbers coming in. He throws strikes and is aggressive and pitches with a lot of confidence."

The Diamondbacks have batted .207 against lefties in their last 11 games. Arizona is 14-72 when it fails to score at least six runs.

The Rays counter with converted reliever Andy Sonnanstine (3-1, 4.10), who makes his third straight start with Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis on the disabled list with shoulder injuries. The right-hander went five innings in Saturday's 7-3 win over Baltimore, allowing three runs and three hits to earn his first victory as a starter since June 25, 2009.

Sonnanstine has a 3.00 ERA in two relief appearances versus Oakland this season and is 2/3 with a 6.75 ERA in five career starts against the A's.

He'll face an Oakland club trying to win three straight for the first time since a season-high five-game run July 10-18.

After dropping Monday's opener, the A's won two straight against Toronto for their sixth straight series win at home.

"It's good that we're showing signs of life that we're going out there battling and sticking to it," Gio Gonzalez said after throwing seven innings of two-hit ball in Wednesday's 5-4 victory.

Center fielder Coco Crisp went 3 for 3 with two doubles Wednesday, and is 6 for 7 with three doubles, a homer and three RBIs in the last two games.

The A's have won four of five at home against the Rays, who are a major league-best 35-22 on the road.

Rays left fielder Carl Crawford is batting .342 with two homers and eight RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak, but is 2 for 20 against Oakland in 2010. He has an RBI double in his only career matchup with Cahill.

10:10 PM ET, August 19, 2010
Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California

The Rockies used three walks and three wild pitches by Octavio Dotel to score the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, bouncing back from Tuesday's 6-0 defeat and moving within six games of the Phillies.

They'll now try for their first series win over the Dodgers in nearly two years. Since taking the first two games of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 19-20, 2008, Colorado has lost 22 of 30 against Los Angeles.

The Rockies also hope to end a frustrating pattern of inconsistency this month. They've alternated wins and losses in their 15 August games.

Another win would require ending a troubling trend involving Jorge De La Rosa (4-3, 4.99). The Rockies are 0-8 against the Dodgers when the left-hander pitches, with De La Rosa going 0-5 with a 6.56 ERA in seven starts and one relief outing.

Matt Kemp is 9 for 18 with two homers against De La Rosa, while James Loney is 8 for 15 with a homer.

Lilly hasn't faced the Rockies since April 13, 2009, when he held Colorado to one hit in 6 2/3 innings of a 4-0 win while with the Cubs.

This will be Colorado's first game without Brad Hawpe, who had been with the team since 2004. The struggling outfielder was released following Wednesday's game.

"Anytime when a team's struggling, less is more," said Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia, who had his team skip batting practice Wednesday. "If anything, our guys are working too hard."

Scioscia will give the ball to Ervin Santana (12-8, 3.99 ERA) in an attempt to cool off the Boston bats. The right-hander pitched well at Fenway on May 4, limiting the Red Sox to one run over seven innings, but wound up without a decision in a 5-1 loss. He is 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA in seven starts versus Boston.

Santana has won four of his last five starts overall, including a 7-2 home victory Saturday over Toronto in which he allowed one run, three hits and four walks in seven innings.

The Red Sox will counter with Josh Beckett (3-2, 6.51), who will make another attempt to reverse course in his disappointing season. The right-hander appeared to be doing just that in his first three starts following a two-month DL stint due to a back strain, going 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA, but has gotten pounded for 13 runs and 21 hits over 9 2/3 innings while losing his last two outings.

Beckett's first win after being activated came against the Angels. He gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings of a 7-3 win in Anaheim on July 28, improving to 3-3 with a 4.10 lifetime ERA against Los Angeles.

Maholm lost for the fourth time in five starts Saturday at Houston, but delivered his best outing of the bunch. Maholm had a 9.90 ERA in his previous four starts before holding Houston to three runs over 6 2/3 innings in a 3-2 loss.

"Paul did a really good job. He deserved better," manager John Russell said. "It's getting to be old. Our pitchers are pitching well, but we can't get any runs for them."

Maholm is 3-3 with a 4.66 ERA in six starts against Florida, and he's been hurt by the long ball. He's given up seven homers in 36 2/3 innings, with Hanley Ramirez (6 for 16) and Dan Uggla (3 for 16) each hitting two.

Sean West was scheduled to start Thursday's finale, but the left-hander -- 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA -- is headed to the disabled list with right knee inflammation.

Rookie Alex Sanabia (1-1, 4.63) will be called up from Triple-A New Orleans to replace him and make his fifth start. The first three went well -- he allowed one run in 13 innings -- but his fourth was miserable. Sanabia gave up seven runs and nine hits over two innings in a 10-9, 10-inning loss at San Francisco on July 28.

"The more we expose him out there, the more reports there are on him," manager Edwin Rodriguez told the Marlins' official website in late July. "I think he has to work on that third pitch. He has the fastball. He has a very good changeup. He has to work more on his slider to keep everyone honest."

Sanabia was 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts with the Zephyrs.

7:05 PM ET, August 19, 2010Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Sanchez guaranteed a sweep of the Padres last weekend, but could not deliver on his promise, giving up three runs in 5 1/3 innings of San Francisco's 3-2, series-opening loss to San Diego on Friday.

"I believe in my team, you know? I have confidence," Sanchez said after the loss. "Nothing against them but I know if we keep fighting like this I think we're going to make it."

Sanchez gave up one run in five innings of a 5-1 win over the Phillies on April 26.

He will be opposed by Cole Hamels (7-9, 3.33), who is 1-2 despite a 1.81 ERA in his last seven outings, allowing one run or fewer in five of them.

Hamels was stellar in a losing effort Friday, giving up one run and five hits over eight innings of a 1-0 loss to the New York Mets. Philadelphia hasn't been able to put runs on the board for the left-hander, who has lost his last two starts by 1-0 scores.

"I can't do anything else," Hamels said. "I'm going to try to go out there and pitch to every hitter the best I possibly can and try to go as deep as I possibly can -- and minimize the damage."

7:05 PM ET, August 19, 2010
Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland

Lewis (9-9, 3.28 ERA) hasn't won since July 16 at Boston, but poor run support has been the primary reason. The right-hander has a 2.76 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings in his last five outings, but the Rangers have scored a total of four runs for him in that stretch.

"You've got to roll with the punches," Lewis said after Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Red Sox. "If I go out there and give a quality start and keep my team there, we're one swing away from getting a win."

Lewis, who spent the last two years pitching in Japan, hasn't started against the Orioles since June 1, 2003.

Baltimore's Brian Matusz (4-12, 5.28) would prefer to forget his two starts against Texas this year. He's 0-1 with an 18.56 ERA in those outings, lasting a total of 5 1/3 innings and surrendering two homers to Vladimir Guerrero.

The rookie left-hander, who hopes to avoid matching teammate Kevin Millwood and Philadelphia's Roy Oswalt for the major league lead in losses, is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last two home starts, but he struggled at Tampa Bay on Saturday, giving up five runs in four innings of a 7-3 loss.

It's unclear if Matusz will have to face Rangers third baseman Michael Young, who has missed Texas' last two games with a stiff neck.

"Right now it's kind of a hour by hour kind of thing," Young said Wednesday. "I get more treatment and it feels better. So I imagine that will continue."

The Orioles likely won't avoid major league batting leader Josh Hamilton, who is 11 for 24 with two homers and three doubles against Baltimore this year.

Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California

The Colorado Rockies haven't scored in their last 21 innings at Dodger Stadium. A matchup with Hiroki Kuroda could help them put an end to that streak.

The Rockies will try to continue their success against Kuroda and even this three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night.Watch Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers mlb live streaming major league baseball online broadcasting internet tv august 18,2010.

While Colorado (61-57) leads the majors with a .298 average at home, it owns the second-worst average on the road at .232. The Rockies have been shut out in three of their last four road games after losing 6-0 to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Los Angeles (61-59) improved to 19-6 against Colorado since the start of last season as Clayton Kershaw pitched seven strong innings. The fourth-place Dodgers pulled within a game of the third-place Rockies, who trail NL West-leading San Diego by 10 games.

Kuroda (8-11, 3.53 ERA) is 0-3 with a 7.57 ERA in five career starts against the Rockies, and 0-1 with an 8.68 ERA in two this year. Part-time players Seth Smith and Miguel Olivo could be in the lineup Wednesday, as Smith is 4 for 7 against Kuroda this season and Olivo 3 for 6.

The Dodgers right-hander has endured some bad luck while going 1-6 with a 4.05 ERA in his last eight outings, including 0-3 with a 3.75 ERA in the last four while receiving five total runs of support.

Kuroda yielded one run over seven innings at Atlanta on Friday in a 1-0 loss -- his fifth defeat by shutout this year.

"I didn't really count but it's really disappointing when you say it's the fifth one," Kuroda said.

Kuroda could use the kind of offense the Dodgers provided Tuesday. Scott Podsednik and James Loney had two-run doubles during a five-run fifth inning for Los Angeles, which broke out after totaling six runs in losing three of four at Atlanta.

"We had the one inning where we scored. As a manager you certainly want your ball club to be able to threaten in more than one inning," manager Joe Torre said. "We haven't been able to do that, but I'll take the one inning. We just haven't been able to put enough pressure on the opposition by getting enough men on base. Hopefully we can do a little bit more of that."

Los Angeles is seeking its first four-game home win streak since June 6-9.

Rockies center fielder Carlos Gonzalez has recorded at least one hit in all six games he has played against the Dodgers this year, going 8 for 24 with eight RBIs.

Colorado's Jason Hammel (8-7, 4.42) has gone 1-4 with a 5.18 ERA in his last six outings. He fell to 2-6 with a 5.64 ERA in 10 road games after yielding four runs in seven innings of a 4-0 loss to New York on Thursday.

The right-hander is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in five career appearances -- two starts -- against the Dodgers.

Edinson Volquez feels more confident each time he takes the mound for the Cincinnati Reds.

Looking to record a fourth straight strong start, Volquez tries to help the first-place Reds win their fifth in a row and continue their recent dominance of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

In his sixth start since coming back from Tommy John surgery July 17, Volquez (3-1, 4.25 ERA) allowed a run and struck out six in six innings of a 7-2 win over Florida on Friday. The right-hander has gone 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA in his last three outings.Watch Cincinnati Reds vs Arizona Diamondbacks mlb live streaming baseball online broadcasting internet transmission tv august 18,2010.

"Every time I pitch, I feel like I'm getting into a better rhythm and keeping us in the game," Volquez said.

In his only appearance against the Diamondbacks, Volquez gave up two runs, walked six and struck out eight in six innings of a 3-2, 10-inning win at Arizona on Sept. 13, 2008.

He'll try to be more efficient this time as the Reds (68-51) go for a fourth straight win against Arizona after opening a nine-game western trip with a 6-2 victory over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Cincinnati has won 14 of 17 over the Diamondbacks and outscored them 37-14 during a six-game winning streak at Arizona.

"It was definitely important for this road trip to get off to a good start," Tuesday's winning pitcher Bronson Arroyo said.

After being swept in a three-game home set by St. Louis last week, the Reds' four consecutive wins have them two games up on the Cardinals in the NL Central.

"It's good," said shortstop Paul Janish, who went 2 for 4 with a homer Tuesday. "We are definitely doing some scoreboard watching."

Janish has batted .302 with eight RBIs in his last 12 games.

Cincinnati's Scott Rolen had three hits with three RBIs on Tuesday. He is 7 for 11 with six RBIs in three games after going 0 for 10 in his previous three contests.

The All-Star third baseman is 2 for 3 with a home run against Arizona's Rodrigo Lopez (5-11, 4.93), who is searching for his first victory in more than a month.

Lopez, 0-4 with a 6.69 ERA in his last six starts, allowed seven runs in five innings of an 8-4 loss at Milwaukee on Thursday.

The right-hander is 1-0 with a 6.32 ERA in four starts against the Reds.

Kelly Johnson hit a two-run homer and had two of the six hits Tuesday for Arizona (47-73), which went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position as it lost for the fourth time in five games.

"If you are going to beat a team like this you need to do those things," Diamondbacks interim manager Kirk Gibson said of his club's missed opportunities.

Johnson has gone 4 for 10 with two homers in his last three games but is 1 for 7 with a double and four strikeouts against Volquez.

Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Continued success against the Chicago White Sox has helped the first-place Minnesota Twins put some distance between themselves and their rival in the race for the AL Central title.

Coming off a stunning walkoff victory over Chicago, Minnesota looks to increase its lead over the second-place White Sox as it goes for a sixth consecutive win Wednesday night at Target Field.Watch Chicago White Sox vs Minnesota Twins mlb live streaming baseball online broadcasting internet tv august 18,2010.

Former White Sox slugger Jim Thome's two-run homer gave Minnesota (69-50) a 7-6, 10-inning victory Tuesday in the opener of this key three-game set.

The Twins, four games up on the White Sox (65-54), lead the season series 9-4 and have won six of the last seven matchups. Chicago, 2-5 at Target Field in 2010, is struggling to keep up with a Minnesota club that has gone 23-8 since the All-Star break.

"It's an extremely big series," first baseman Michael Cuddyer told the Twins' official website. "You've got to win every game, that's what your mindset has to be."

Chicago, which dropped two of three at home to Minnesota last week, has lost seven of nine.

"Have a couple of drinks and come back (Wednesday) and fight," manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Thome is 12 for 31 with two homers against his former team this season after going 3 for 5 with three RBIs on Tuesday. He is 9 for 21 with four homers and 10 RBIs in his last six games.

"Any time you play your ex-team, you obviously want to do well," said Thome, who played with the White Sox from 2006 until being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers last August. "Tomorrow's a new day, but for a little bit here you cherish that moment."

Francisco Liriano (11-7, 3.26 ERA) will try to beat Gavin Floyd for the second time in as many starts Wednesday.

Liriano allowed a run in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-1 win at Chicago on Thursday. The left-hander has gone 5-0 with a 1.62 ERA in his last six starts, and is 2-0 with a 2.79 ERA in three games versus the White Sox this season.

Floyd (8-9, 3.70) allowed six runs while striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings in the loss to Liriano. The right-hander had gone 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA in his previous four starts.

"Just go out there and try and ignore (that game), look forward to (the next one)," Floyd told the White Sox's official website.

He has posted a 5.09 ERA in losing three straight starts to the Twins.

Chicago's Alexei Ramirez tied Tuesday's game with a solo homer in the ninth inning and gave his team the lead with an RBI single in the 10th. Ramirez, batting .318 with two homers and seven RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak, has hit .333 with seven RBIs against the Twins this season.

The shortstop is 7 for 14 with a double against Liriano.

Chicago relievers have a 7.84 ERA in the last seven games after All-Star Matt Thornton allowed Thome's shot Tuesday.

Solid starting pitching has helped put the Kansas City Royals in position to match their longest winning stretch of the season.

With veteran Bruce Chen hoping for another strong effort, the Royals try for a third straight victory overall while looking to extend their winning streak over the visiting Cleveland Indians to five games Wednesday night.Watch Cleveland Indians vs Kansas City Royals mlb live streaming baseball online broadcast internet transmission tv august 18,2010.

Kansas City (50-69) has totaled three runs but allowed one while winning its last two games. The Royals have won three consecutive games four times this season.

"We kind of go in spurts," said ace Zack Greinke, who pitched six solid innings in a 2-1 win over Cleveland on Tuesday night. "We've been pitching good lately. Most of the year, we've been hitting and not really pitching good. Right now, we're pitching good."

After Brian Bullington allowed two hits over eight innings in a 1-0 win over the Yankees on Sunday, and Greinke's effort in Tuesday's series opener, the Royals turn to Chen (7-6, 4.50 ERA) to help secure their first winning series since taking three of four from Baltimore July 29-Aug. 1.

Chen, who allowed three runs in five innings of a 4-3 loss to the Yankees on Thursday, is 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA in August.

"That's what I see Bruce being capable of doing," manager Ned Yost told the Royals' official website.

The 33-year-old left-hander is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA as a starter against the Indians, and 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA in two relief appearances versus Cleveland this season.

Wilson Betemit and Yuniesky Betancourt each homered Tuesday for the Royals, who have won three of four despite scoring 10 runs over that span. Betemit is 8 for 17 with two homers in his last five games.

Though the Royals have outscored Cleveland 25-12 during their four-game winning streak over the Indians (49-70), they struggled the last time they faced scheduled starter Fausto Carmona (11-10, 3.87).

The right-hander, 5-2 with a 4.11 ERA in 10 starts against the Royals, allowed five hits in five innings of a 4-0 win at Kansas City on May 12.

Carmona, however, looks to avoid losing his third straight start despite giving up three runs in six innings of a 3-2 loss to Seattle on Friday. The Indians have scored a combined four runs in Carmona's last two starts.

"I can't control that," Carmona told the Indians' official website.

Travis Hafner had two hits Tuesday for Cleveland, which stranded 12 runners and went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position while losing for the seventh time in nine games.

Hafner, who was activated Sunday after a stint on the disabled list with a sore shoulder, is 14 for 30 in his last eight games. He is 3 for 8 with a double versus Chen.

Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas

With an embattled and injured closer and a struggling lineup, the New York Mets have few things to be excited about. R.A. Dickey is one of them.

The knuckleballer returns to the mound for the first time since tossing a one-hitter as the visiting Mets face the Houston Astros on Wednesday night.

New York (59-60) slipped to 11-20 since the All-Star break with a 4-3 loss to Houston on Tuesday, hours after it placed closer Francisco Rodriguez on the disqualified list.Watch New York Mets vs Houston Astros mlb live stream major league baseball online transmission internet tv august 18,2010.

The team is withholding Rodriguez's pay after he suffered a season-ending thumb injury while punching his girlfriend's father last week at Citi Field. Rodriguez was charged with third-degree assault.

"I just hope that he takes this time off to make things right with his family, get that stuff situated," third baseman David Wright said. "When he's ready to come back physically, we'll welcome him back."

Wright homered Tuesday, but New York failed to score more than three runs for the fifth consecutive game. Since the All-Star break, the Mets are batting .213 while scoring a major league-low 87 runs.

That's a big reason why Dickey (8-5, 2.43 ERA) is 2/3 despite a 1.96 ERA in seven second-half starts, the best of which came Friday night against Philadelphia.

The 35-year-old right-hander pitched his second career shutout, allowing only a sixth-inning single by pitcher Cole Hamels in a 1-0 win.

"I knew, from the way it felt out of my hand, I had a chance at a special night," said Dickey, who would rank seventh in the majors in ERA if he had enough innings to qualify.

Dickey hopes to quiet a Houston club that has totaled 17 extra-base hits in the last four games, including four doubles and three home runs by Hunter Pence.

The right fielder drove in all of the Astros' runs with two homers in Tuesday's win, the 10th for Houston (52-66) in its last 13 home games.

"He's been hitting the ball real well for the last week," manager Brad Mills said. "Anytime you get your number three hitter doing that, something is going to happen."

Pence has never faced Dickey, whose only appearances against the Astros were two relief outings last year. Houston's Carlos Lee, however, has gone 5 for 7 with three doubles and a homer against Dickey, all from 2001-2004.

Houston will give the ball to Brett Myers (8-7, 3.13), who has completed at least six innings in all 24 starts this season.

"It doesn't mean anything," Myers told the Astros' official website. "It's good the coaching staff is able to go out there and let me compete for six innings or more. ... There's been times I didn't deserve to go six innings and they stuck with me."

Myers has been plenty deserving lately, posting a 2.22 ERA and seven quality starts in his last eight outings -- one against Pittsburgh on Friday. He didn't get the decision, but struck out seven without a walk in seven innings of a 4-1 victory.

This will be Myers' first start against the Mets since Sept. 5, 2008, when he struck out 10 in eight innings of a 3-0 win while with Philadelphia.

Wright is 6 for 28 against Myers, but four of the hits were home runs.

7:10 PM ET, August 18, 2010
Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia

Tim Hudson may be thrilled for another chance to face the Washington Nationals, a team he has dominated throughout his career.

Lately, no one has been hitting the resurgent right-hander.

Hudson tries to win his sixth straight start overall and 10th consecutive decision against Washington on Wednesday night, with his Atlanta Braves looking to extend their NL East lead.Watch Washington Nationals vs Atlanta Braves mlb live streaming major league baseball online broadcasting internet transmission tv august 18,2010.

After missing most of 2009 following Tommy John surgery, the 35-year-old Hudson (14-5, 2.13 ERA) is looking like a contender for the Cy Young Award.

He has given up two total runs in his last five starts, lowering his ERA to the second-best mark in majors behind that of St. Louis' Adam Wainwright.

In each of his last two outings, Hudson worked eight shutout innings while allowing three hits and one walk. The Braves needed his stellar performance in a 1-0 win over Los Angeles on Friday.

"I feel good," said Hudson, who last won six consecutive starts during a seven-start win streak to end the 2000 season. "I'm happy with how I'm giving the team a chance to win.

"It would be nice to get some big leads and blow some teams out, but if we just keep pitching this way we're going to win some more close games."

Winning against Washington has been no problem for Hudson. He has gone 2-0 with a 1.25 ERA in three starts versus the Nationals this year and 9-0 with a 1.45 ERA in 12 matchups with them since the start of 2007.

Hudson has allowed more than two earned runs once in 16 career starts against the Nationals franchise, which has beaten him only once, on June 5, 2006.

Washington slugger Ryan Zimmerman is 5 for 31 (.161) against Hudson, while Josh Willingham is 1 for 20.

Hudson will try to pitch the Braves (70-49) to a fourth consecutive win. Atlanta cruised to a 10-2 victory in the series opener Tuesday, winning for the sixth time in seven games and remaining 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place Philadelphia.

With three hits, three runs and two RBIs, Martin Prado provided a big boost for Atlanta in his first game since July 30. Despite a stint on the disabled list with a broken finger, the All-Star is tied with Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez for the NL lead with 141 hits.

The Braves also got contributions from Matt Diaz, who had two RBIs out of the cleanup spot, and Diory Hernandez, whose pinch-hit home run was his first homer of the season.

"It's been a year like that," Diaz said. "It's a different guy every night. It's got that feel" like something special is happening.

Prado, whose return helps fill the void left by the injured Chipper Jones, has gone 7 for 13 against Washington's Livan Hernandez (8-8, 3.08).

The right-hander slipped to 6-16 with a 5.19 ERA in his career against Atlanta with a 3-1 loss July 28, but he is 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA in five starts versus the Braves since the start of 2009.

Hernandez hopes to help Washington (51-68) avoid a fourth straight road loss. The Nationals have averaged 2.8 runs while dropping seven of nine overall, with slugger Adam Dunn going 5 for 35 with 15 strikeouts in that stretch.

John Lackey's first season with the Boston Red Sox hasn't gone exactly according to plan, but he's saved two of his best performances for his former team.

The right-hander has a chance to beat the Los Angeles Angels for the third time in as many starts, while Boston can improve to 9-0 against the Angels this season on Wednesday night.

Lackey (10-7, 4.54 ERA) has struggled with consistency after signing a five-year, $82.5 million contract with Boston in the offseason following a successful eight-year stint with the Angels.Watch Los Angeles Angels vs Boston Red Sox mlb live stream baseball online broadcast  internet transmission tv august 18,2010.

But he has been sharp in two starts against Los Angeles, going 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA while allowing a total of nine hits in 14 1/3 innings. He was booed during a 4-2 win in his return to Anaheim on July 27.

"Nobody wants to get booed like that," Lackey said. "The scoreboard talks the loudest. ... That won't be forgotten, for sure."

Lackey is still searching for his first win since that outing. He's 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA in three August starts, with opponents hitting .321 against him.

Boston's season series with the Angels has included nothing but victories, an especially fulfilling outcome for the Red Sox after they were swept by Los Angeles in last year's AL division series.

The Red Sox (68-52) began their nine-game homestand by roughing up Angels ace Jered Weaver in a 6-0 win Tuesday night. While Dustin Pedroia was 0 for 4 in his return from a broken left foot, Boston got more than enough offense from Ryan Kalish's fourth-inning grand slam.

A strong performance on this homestand may be vital for the Red Sox as they attempt to shrink their 5 1/2-game deficit behind New York and Tampa Bay in the AL East.

The Angels (60-60) are even more desperate for wins, trailing Texas by eight games in the West. They continue to struggle on the road, losing 16 of their last 21 away from home.

"As an overall team we're just not getting it done," manager Mike Scioscia said. "It's been a very frustrating process."

Scott Kazmir (8-10, 6.36) is in the midst of a frustrating individual season, but he has won six of his last eight road outings.

The left-hander has also posted a pair of encouraging starts since a stint on the disabled list for shoulder fatigue. He limited Toronto to four hits and two runs in six innings Friday, but didn't get any run support in a 3-0 loss.

"I felt like I was a little erratic early on, but then I settled in after that third inning," Kazmir said. "I thought I was in a pretty good groove with all my pitches."

Kazmir was clobbered in an 11-6 loss at Fenway Park on May 6, but he's generally pitched well in Boston, going 6-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 14 starts.

Pedroia, however, has posed problems for Kazmir, going 16 for 31 against him. Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez, a switch-hitter who is batting .396 right-handed this year, is 7 for 13 with a home run in the matchup.

Josh Johnson didn't look anything like a Cy Young Award contender his last time out, failing to escape the fourth inning in his worst start in more than three years.

Following that rough outing with another seems rather unlikely.

The Florida Marlins ace gets an ideal opportunity to bounce back Wednesday night when he faces the Pittsburgh Pirates and their NL-worst offense.Watch Florida Marlins vs Pittsburgh Pirates mlb live stream baseball internet transmission online broadcast tv august 18,2010.

Johnson (10-5, 2.27 ERA) seemed well on his way to the Cy Young on July 22, when he was 10-3 with a 1.61 ERA after a 12-start stretch in which he posted a 0.75 ERA.

He hasn't won in four outings since, and struggled through one of the worst games of his career Friday at Cincinnati. The right-hander gave up six runs and 10 hits over 3 2/3 innings, failing to record a strikeout in a 7-2 loss.

"It was terrible all around," Johnson said. "If I had to rank it, it would be close to the bottom."

Johnson hadn't allowed six runs while failing to get through four innings since giving up seven runs over three innings in an 11-1 loss to Minnesota on June 23, 2007.

"It's just mechanics," pitching coach Randy St. Claire told the Marlins' official website. "His command just isn't sharp. He's pulling off the ball. Nothing huge."

Johnson's ERA has dropped from easily the best in the majors to fourth, but the Marlins (58-60) won't be surprised if he rebounds Wednesday at PNC Park. Pittsburgh is averaging 3.43 runs and hitting .241, both last in the NL.

The Pirates (40-79) mustered six hits against Ricky Nolasco and two relievers in a 6-0 loss Tuesday that evened the four-game set at 1-all. The Marlins held a closed-door meeting after Monday's 7-1 loss.

"Our intensity and our competitiveness was at a different level tonight, and I think our level of having fun was at a higher level, too," second baseman Dan Uggla said. "I think everybody showed up with a different attitude today."

It's no surprise Pittsburgh has struggled to hit the premier pitching in the NL, but the numbers are still staggering. The nine pitchers other than Johnson that make up the league's top 10 in ERA are 8-2 with a 1.22 ERA in 12 starts against the Pirates.

In Johnson's only start versus Pittsburgh, he gave up two runs over seven innings, leaving without a decision in a 5-3 home loss July 20, 2006.

Aside from who Pittsburgh faces, the presence of Ross Ohlendorf (1-9, 3.95) on the mound seems to guarantee the Pirates' bats will go cold. No starter who has pitched 50 innings has received less support than the 2.24 runs Ohlendorf averages.

Ohlendorf struck out seven and allowed four hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings Friday against Houston, but left without a decision in a 4-1 defeat.

"This is what Ross looks like when he's winning," Pirates manager John Russell said. "His pitches were working well. His velocity was very good. It was a great game. He really did a nice job. Hopefully we can get him a win someday."

Ohlendorf was 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts against Florida last season. He held the Marlins to two hits in an 8-0 victory at PNC on April 20, 2009.

The Philadelphia Phillies have plenty of work to do to get to first place in the NL East, but their excellent play over the past month is still paying dividends.

The Phillies seized the wild-card lead from the San Francisco Giants in their series opener, and they'll look to add to that cushion Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia (67-51) was seven games behind Atlanta as of July 21, but has since put together a torrid stretch befitting the two-time reigning NL champions. The Phillies have gone 19-5 over their last 24 games to pull within 2 1/2 games of the Braves. Watch San Francisco Giants v Philadelphia Phillies mlb live streaming baseball transmission internet tv online broadcast august 18,2010.

While catching Atlanta remains the goal, Philadelphia's hot streak -- much of which has been accomplished without Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino and Chase Utley -- started to pay off Tuesday. Utley went 0 for 5 in his return from the disabled list, but his teammates pounded out 13 hits in a 9-3 rout of the Giants to grab the wild-card lead.

"There's so much baseball to play," said shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who had two hits and three RBIs. "Only sure way in (the playoffs) is to win the division. Our goal is to win as many as we can. It's still pretty early to focus on the wild card."

Philadelphia leads the Giants (67-53) by a game and St. Louis by 1 1/2. Not that manager Charlie Manuel seems to give that race much thought.

"We don't care about the wild card," Manuel said.

San Francisco might have no choice but to care considering its fading position in the NL West. The loss, combined with San Diego's third straight win, put the Giants five games behind the division-leading Padres.

If Bruce Bochy's club doesn't start getting better starting pitching, it won't be catching anyone. San Francisco's rotation is 0-8 with a 5.97 ERA in its last 13 games since Jonathan Sanchez won at Colorado on Aug. 3.

Matt Cain (9-9, 3.11 ERA) tries to end the drought, and he'll be looking for his sixth quality start in seven outings. He gave up three runs and struck out nine over six innings Thursday against the Cubs, but left without a decision in an 8-7 win.

Cain is 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA in four career starts versus Philadelphia, giving up six homers in 20 innings. Utley has hit three of those and is 6 for 12 overall against Cain, but he's hitting just .111 (6 for 54) in his last 15 games versus San Francisco.

Joe Blanton (4-6, 5.69) counters for the Phillies, and when the right-hander starts it usually means the game will come down to a bullpen battle. Blanton has just two decisions in his last nine starts, going 1-1 with a 4.81 ERA.

He gave up four runs, eight hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings Thursday against the Dodgers, exiting without a decision in Philadelphia's 10-9 win that featured a comeback from a seven-run deficit.

The Giants will want to jump on Blanton early. He's given up 14 first-innings runs in his last nine starts.

Blanton has only given up two first-inning runs in six starts against San Francisco, but he's 1/3 with a 5.08 ERA. Former Phillie Pat Burrell, who went deep Tuesday and has 11 RBIs in his past six games, is 2 for 9 with two homers against Blanton.

The New York Yankees have always enjoyed a great deal of success against Jeremy Bonderman, with Alex Rodriguez leading the way.

Rodriguez, though, will miss his second straight game Wednesday night when the Yankees continue a four-game series against Bonderman and the Detroit Tigers.Watch Detroit Tigers vs New York Yankees mlb live streaming online transmission internet baseball tv august 18,2010.

These teams have split the first two games, with Rodriguez exiting after four innings of Monday's 3-1 loss because of tightness in his left calf. He sat out Tuesday's 6-2 victory, and said he will not play Wednesday.

Rodriguez had an MRI on Tuesday night and it showed a low grade strain. The slugger is not sure how long he will be out.

"I feel surprisingly better than I thought," Rodriguez said. "Hopefully it'll just be a day-to-day thing."

The three-time AL MVP's absence is good news for Bonderman (6-8, 5.16 ERA), who is 3-8 with a 5.42 ERA in 12 career regular-season starts against New York (73-46). Rodriguez has enjoyed the most success of any Yankee with more than five at-bats against the right-hander with a .310 average and two homers.

Derek Jeter (.229), Robinson Cano (.200), Jorge Posada (.227) and Mark Teixeira (1 for 15) have all fared poorly in contrast.

Bonderman fell to 2-4 with a 6.45 ERA in nine road starts after giving up six runs over six innings Friday in an 8-4 loss to the White Sox.

"I really had a good breaking ball," said Bonderman, who has never pitched at the new Yankee Stadium. "I was locating. When you have that kind of stuff you should win."

Cano and Curtis Granderson homered Tuesday as New York avoided a third straight loss and remained in a first-place tie with Tampa Bay atop the AL East. Granderson is 4 for 6 in his first two games against his former club.

The Yankees got a boost when Nick Swisher returned to the lineup, saying he will be smarter about taking big swings to protect his sore right elbow. Swisher had a two-run single in four at-bats.

"It's a sharp pain. It's more of a zing when it happens, then it goes away," Swisher said before the game. "These are the dog days right now. This is when the grind starts and I want to be out there."

Detroit (58-61) had a three-game win streak snapped despite homers from Brandon Inge and former Yankees minor-leaguer Austin Jackson.

The Tigers played without second baseman Carlos Guillen, who was out because of a sore left knee. Guillen suffered the injury Monday when he was taken out on a hard slide by Gardner during a game-ending double play.

"He's fine," manager Jim Leyland said. "The MRI was clean. And right now we're saying, he's day to day."

Dustin Moseley (2-2, 4.41) will make his fifth start for New York after going 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in the first four. He has alternated wins and losses, yielding four runs over 4 1/3 innings in Friday's 4-3 loss at Kansas City.

The right-hander is 0-0 with a 6.52 ERA in two career starts against the Tigers.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland

A top-of-the-rotation starter has been a need for the Baltimore Orioles since Mike Mussina departed a decade ago.

While Jeremy Guthrie may not completely fit that description, there's no denying he has pitched like an ace of late.Watch Seattle Mariners vs Baltimore Orioles mlb live streaming online transmission internet tv august 18,2010.
Guthrie looks to match a career high by winning his fourth straight start as the Orioles conclude a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

Last-place Baltimore (42-78) has experienced a resurgence since Buck Showalter took over as manager Aug. 3, winning 10 of 15. The rotation has posted 12 quality starts and a 2.82 ERA during that stretch.

No Orioles starter has been better lately than Guthrie (7-11, 3.88 ERA). The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.51 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break, walking seven and striking out 24.

Guthrie allowed two hits over six innings in a 5-0 road win over Tampa Bay on Friday.

"I had to battle. I didn't have a great feel for any of my pitches, " he said. "For the most part I made some important pitches at important places in the game."

He last won four consecutive starts July 28-Aug. 13, 2008.

Guthrie is 0-2 with a 5.29 ERA in three home starts against the Mariners despite posting quality starts in two of them.

Kevin Millwood provided the Orioles with their latest strong outing Tuesday night. He worked eight solid innings but was outpitched by Luke French, who combined with Brandon League on a three-hitter in the Mariners' 4-0 victory.

Substitute left fielder Matt Tuiasosopo hit a three-run homer and drove in all four runs for Seattle (47-73), which improved to 5-3 under interim manager Daren Brown.

Tuiasosopo learned 20 minutes before the game that he would start in place of Ryan Langerhans, who was a late scratch with a severe headache.

"I just wanted to go out there, and ... find a way offensively or defensively to help this team win a game. Just be loose and have fun," Tuiasosopo said. "Gosh, it feels really good."

Tuiasosopo came in with a .155 average, one homer and two RBIs in 71 at-bats.

"It's good to see him when he gets an opportunity like he did tonight," Brown said. "He's got a chance to be a good offensive player."

Seattle will try to win its fourth straight series by sending David Pauley (1-4, 3.31) to the mound.

Pauley earned his first major league victory Friday, 3-2 at Cleveland after allowing two runs over six innings. It was his 11th start and 19th career appearance.

The right-hander appeared in nine games for Boston in 2008 and entered his sixth start of the season for Seattle with a career record of 0-7 and 6.40 ERA.

"I'm just grateful to get this opportunity," said Pauley, who signed as a minor league free agent in December and had a 1-6 record at Triple-A Tacoma before being called up June 27.

The Orioles acquired Pauley from Boston on Jan. 19, 2009, but he didn't make an appearance for them. His only game against Baltimore came in relief with Boston on Sept. 2, 2008.

The addition of Roy Oswalt is starting to pay dividends for the Philadelphia Phillies. Two more additions to the lineup this week could be just as key.

It's possible Chase Utley and Ryan Howard will return to face the San Francisco Giants during this three-game series, which begins Tuesday night with Oswalt looking to build on his first win with the Phillies.

Philadelphia (66-51) is hopeful Howard and Utley will be available at some point this week as it tries to continue putting pressure on Atlanta atop the NL East.Watch San Francisco Giants v Philadelphia Phillies live stream major league baseball online broadcast august 17

Howard, the team leader with 23 homers and 81 RBIs, is scheduled to come off the disabled list Tuesday, but soreness in his left ankle could cause a delay.

Utley, a five-time All-Star, is rehabbing from a thumb injury with Class-A Clearwater and could be back as early as Tuesday. He had a .277 average with 11 homers and 37 RBIs before undergoing surgery in June.

"I think he'll let us know," manager Charlie Manuel told the team's official website. "I trust him. I definitely think he'll be very truthful to us."

While the Phillies are concerned with Howard and Utley's health, Oswalt (7-13, 3.34 ERA) might be easing any worries about settling in with his new club.

The right-hander was acquired in a four-player trade from Houston on July 29, but needed three starts to get his first win for Philadelphia and he did it in impressive fashion.

Oswalt allowed five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of a 2-0 win over Los Angeles on Wednesday. He had been 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA in his two previous outings.

"I felt real good with my mechanics (Wednesday)," Oswalt said. "I felt strong. I was able to use my lower half most of the night to kind of carry me through."

Oswalt is 0-3 with a 3.15 ERA in three starts against the Giants this season, but those came with Houston and he was backed by only two total runs.

He'll be matched up with Barry Zito (8-6, 3.44) as this series between the NL wild-card leaders gets underway. Philadelphia is one percentage point ahead of San Francisco (67-52).

The Phillies, winners of 18 of 23 after beating New York 3-1 on Sunday, are beginning a 10-game homestand, and they've won 15 of 17 at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia is 12-4 in its last 16 home meetings with the Giants but dropped two of three at San Francisco from April 26-28.

The Giants' rotation hasn't won a game since Aug. 3 by Jonathan Sanchez, who will start the series finale Thursday. Since Sanchez's victory, the starters are 0-7 with a 5.88 ERA in 12 games, with the club managing wins in five.

The offense of the second-place Giants also sputtered over the weekend, hitting .200 as they dropped two of three at home to NL West-leading San Diego.

San Francisco has scored just nine runs and batted .175 in its last five road games, losing four.

Zito is 0-4 with a 5.73 ERA in eight road starts since a 3-2 win at Florida on May 5.

The left-hander hasn't received much help in his last two, getting one total run of support while going 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA. He's won only once in his last 11 outings overall while getting an average of 2.3 runs of support.

He's won both of his starts at Philadelphia behind a 1.50 ERA, with the most recent coming June 4, 2007.

Zito wasn't sharp at home Wednesday, giving up four runs and 10 hits -- two homers -- in 6 1/3 innings while not getting a decision in a 5-4 win over Chicago.

The Florida Marlins' woes with runners in scoring position have continued, as has their losing streak.

The Marlins look to avoid dropping their fifth straight when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Florida (57-60) started its 10-game road trip with a three-game sweep of Washington, but then lost all three contests in Cincinnati before falling 7-1 to the Pirates in the series opener Monday.Watch Florida Marlins v Pittsburgh Pirates live stream major league baseball august 17

The Marlins went 0 for 27 with men in scoring position against the Reds and that trend continued Monday, when they went 0 for 6. Florida has scored seven runs during its four-game skid.

"I think we have the talent," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "I think (the players) know we should be out there performing better. But then again, I say this honestly, most of them are trying 100 percent."

The Marlins have struggled to find any consistency in their last 16 games. They won four in a row before their current slide, a surge that followed a five-game losing streak, which followed a three-game win streak.

"We have to take it upon ourselves as professionals and as a team to be more competitive, be more focused when we're playing and have more intensity," second baseman Dan Uggla said. "We've got to bounce back, even if something may not go right early on in a game."

Uggla and rookie Mike Stanton have been the only bright spots in the Marlins' lineup of late, combining for four of the club's five hits Monday.

Stanton is 15 for 27 with four homers and five doubles during the trip. Rodriguez moved him into the fifth spot in the lineup Sunday.

"More frequently, he's going to have runners in scoring position," Rodriguez told the team's official website. "So the pitchers will approach him differently. We'll see how he handles it."

Uggla, 12 for 27 with eight RBIs on the trip, is 5 for 11 against Pirates scheduled starter Zach Duke (5-11, 5.20 ERA).

Duke has gone 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA in his last three starts, giving up three runs in six innings of a 3-0 loss to San Diego on Thursday. The left-hander is 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA in five career starts versus Florida.

Ricky Nolasco (13-8, 4.39) will try to help the Marlins snap a five-game losing streak at PNC Park. Florida has gone 7-19 in its last 26 at Pittsburgh (40-78).

The right-hander pitched six innings in a 5-0 victory over the Nationals on Thursday. He has gone 8-2 with a 3.76 ERA in his last 10 starts.

Nolasco bounced back from a rough outing in his previous start Aug. 6, when he gave up seven runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 7-0 loss to St. Louis. He is 2/3 with a 2.45 ERA in seven games -- five starts -- versus Pittsburgh.

The Boston Red Sox have no idea how much having second baseman Dustin Pedroia back will help, but they're ecstatic the former MVP is ready for the season's stretch run.

With Pedroia sidelined since June 25 with a fractured bone in his left foot, Boston (67-52) went 23-21 without the 2008 AL MVP and lost ground to the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East race. With the club battling key injuries all year, including Kevin Youkilis being out for the season, the Red Sox could use a boost as they chase a fourth straight postseason appearance.

Manager Terry Francona, though, doesn't want to put too much emphasis on a player who has gone nearly eight weeks without facing major league pitching.

"I don't know (what Pedroia's return will mean). How do you know?" Francona told the Red Sox's official website. ".. If he goes 0-for-40, not much. The idea is, he's a great player, so we're thrilled. So we don't know how it affects the games because the games aren't played yet."

Right-hander Clay Buchholz (13-5, 2.49 ERA), who will start the series opener, is expecting big things from the energetic second baseman.

"He's definitely a spark plug for the offense and defense," Buchholz said of Pedroia, batting .292 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs. "He's just a key component to this team. Once he gets back and gets his feel back and everything, he's definitely going to be fun to watch, but he's going to help us out also."

Ranked among the league leaders in ERA and tied with fellow All-Star Jon Lester for the team high in victories, Buchholz has more than done his part to improve the Red Sox's playoff chances. He's 3-0 with a 1.48 ERA in his last four outings.

"I've definitely exceeded anything I thought I'd be able to do in this game so far this year," he said after throwing eight innings of one-run ball in Wednesday's 10-1 win at Toronto.

The right-hander has won both of his starts against the Angels (60-59) this year and Boston has won all seven matchups, including four at Fenway from May 3-6.

Trailing AL West-leading Texas by a wide margin, the Angels likely need another solid performance from ace Jered Weaver (11-7, 2.87) if they're going to post their first win over Boston since sweeping last year's AL division series.

Weaver, 2-0 with an 0.83 ERA in three starts this month, went a season-high eight innings in Wednesday's 2-1, 10-inning victory over Kansas City. He had 11 strikeouts to raise his major league-leading total to 182.

"Weave's stuff wasn't as crisp as we've seen it, but it was his best job of pitching all season," manager Mike Scioscia said.

The right-hander, though, is 1-1 with a 7.06 ERA in four career starts in Boston.

Buchholz is 4-0 with a 1.53 ERA in his last five outings at Fenway.

Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew, batting .333 with four homers and six RBIs during a six-game hitting streak, is 6 for 17 with a homer lifetime against Weaver.

Angels outfielder Torii Hunter is 3 for 16 without an RBI in his last four games, and he's 2 for 23 with eight strikeouts versus Boston in 2010. Hunter has one hit in nine career at-bats against Buchholz.

The Red Sox have never won eight in a row against the Angels in the same season.

The Atlanta Braves have been in first place in the NL East since May 31, but they have a losing record against the last-place Washington Nationals.

The Braves will try to change that Tuesday night when rookie Mike Minor makes his home debut in the opener of a three-game set.Watch Washington Nationals v Atlanta Braves live stream major league baseball online broadcast august 17

Atlanta (69-49) is 4-5 against Washington (51-67) thanks in part to the struggles of its RBI leaders. Troy Glaus is 4 for 32 with two of his team-high 69 RBIs against the Nationals while Brian McCann is 6 for 27 with two of his 63 RBIs.

Glaus is 2 for 14 against Nationals starter Scott Olsen (3-4, 5.11 ERA) while McCann is 6 for 23, but the focus on the mound Tuesday will be on Minor (0-0, 4.50).

Minor made his major league debut last Monday at Houston and allowed four runs in six innings in a 10-4 loss. The 22-year-old left-hander -- the seventh overall pick in the 2009 draft -- was starting in place of Kris Medlen, who is on the disabled list with a right elbow injury.

"There was excitement, nerves, but not too much," Minor said. "I felt pretty comfortable out there. I know there are good guys out there and a really good guy behind the plate. After that first pitch, I was good."

Minor went 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Gwinnett before being called up.

Atlanta increased its lead to 2 1/2 games in the division over Philadelphia with a dramatic victory Monday. Melky Cabrera's two-run single off Octavio Dotel with the bases loaded in the ninth inning capped a three-run rally in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"We don't give up," shortstop Alex Gonzalez said. "We've got a good offense. All those guys took great at-bats."

Rookie Jason Heyward returned after missing a game with swelling in his right knee. Heyward went 0 for 3 to drop to 6 for 46 over his last 13 games.

The Braves lost both of Olsen's starts against them this year, with the left-hander going 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA. Those contests were at Nationals Park, and Olsen is 1/3 with a 7.15 ERA in seven career outings at Turner Field.

Olsen turned in his shortest outing since July 8, 2007, on Wednesday by allowing seven runs over 1 2/3 innings in a 9-5 home loss to Florida.

"I made terrible pitches. You make bad pitches, they hit 'em. That's what happened," Olsen said.

The Nationals took two of three at home over the weekend from Arizona, winning 5-3 on Sunday after entering the series with five straight losses.

"We needed to win a series," outfielder Josh Willingham told the Nationals' official website. "It has been a while. So we hope to keep that going in Atlanta."

Shortstop Ian Desmond is 9 for 26 with three homers and six RBIs against the Braves this year. Desmond leads the majors with 27 errors.

A strong start to their homestand has helped the Tampa Bay Rays move into a tie atop the AL East.

Looking for a fourth straight victory, the Rays hope to fare better than the last time they faced Texas' Tommy Hunter when they continue their series with the Rangers on Tuesday night.

Just off the disabled list, Carlos Pena hit a tiebreaking single to highlight a four-run eighth inning as Tampa Bay (72-46) beat Cliff Lee and the first-place Rangers 6-4 on Monday.Watch Texas Rangers vs Tampa Bay Rays live stream major league baseball august 17

The Rays have won five of seven since a season-high five-game skid, pulling even with New York when the Yankees lost Monday.

Tampa Bay, 3-1 on its six-game homestand, has won 11 of 14 at home over Texas (67-50), which has an eight-game lead in the West despite losing five of eight.

The Rangers, however, appear to have a good chance to even this series with Hunter (9-1, 3.38 ERA) on the mound. The right-hander began the season on the disabled list with an oblique strain, then pitched a five-hitter to beat the Rays 6-1 in his 2010 debut June 5.

Hunter, 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA in three starts against Tampa Bay, has gone 1-1 with an 8.76 ERA in his last three overall. Flu-like symptoms knocked him out after he allowed four runs on solo homers in three innings of a 10-9, 11-inning win over Boston on Friday.

"I don't know what happened," said Hunter, one win away from a career high.

Tampa Bay's Matt Garza (11-7, 3.92) is also looking to establish a career high for victories, but he's gone 0-2 with a 3.05 ERA in three starts since his no-hitter against Detroit on July 26.

The Rays totaled seven runs in those three outings. Garza allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 3-2 road loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.

"He's an excellent pitcher," manager Joe Maddon told the Rays' official website. "We have underachieved as an offense this year."

Garza, 4-3 with a 4.53 ERA in eight starts versus the Rangers, gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 9-5 win at Arlington on June 6. He has gone 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in three home starts against Texas.

He won't have to face Nelson Cruz after the former All-Star was placed on the disabled list with a strained hamstring Monday. Third baseman Michael Young could also sit out after leaving Monday's contest with a stiff neck.

Elvis Andrus and Bengie Molina each had two hits and an RBI in the opener for the Rangers, who have dropped three straight on the road. Andrus is 6 for 16 with four RBIs against the Rays this season.

Pena, who saw his first action since July 31, has batted .320 with eight RBIs in his last seven games against Texas. His two hits in eight at-bats against Hunter were home runs.

The San Diego Padres were a good team without Miguel Tejada. They've been even better with him contributing in a big way offensively.

Tejada looks to continue his hot stretch as the NL West-leading Padres go for a third straight victory Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The 36-year-old shortstop went 4 for 5 with two RBIs as San Diego (70-47) won for the seventh time in eight games, 9-5 over the Cubs on Monday.Watch San Diego Padres vs Chicago Cubs live stream major league baseball online broadcast 17/8

Since going 1 for 10 in his first three games after being acquired from Baltimore last month, Tejada has batted .351 in 13 contests, including 9 for 14 with four RBIs in his last three. He is a lifetime .324 hitter against the Cubs.

"I think we've all seen Miggie now," manager Bud Black said. "He's a professional hitter. Really knows his swing. He has a great approach. Hits all pitches and hits good pitching."

A major-league leading 3.23 ERA has been the key to the Padres' success this season. Jon Garland (11-8, 3.41 ERA) looks to build on his latest strong outing when he takes the mound Tuesday.

The right-hander allowed one hit and struck out five in six innings of a 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday, matching his win total from last season. The veteran has posted a 2.95 ERA in his last six outings.

"Jon knows how to work his way through a lineup," Black said.

Kosuke Fukudome had three hits and two RBIs on Monday for the Cubs (50-69), who have dropped 15 of 19.

"This is not what we expected out of this team," losing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny said. "This is an unfortunate year but there is still a lot of good things that can be done from this team."

Fukudome has batted .321 with six RBIs in his last seven games. He is a lifetime .315 hitter versus San Diego.

Randy Wells (5-10, 4.60) tries to avoid a fourth straight loss when he takes the ball for the Cubs. The right-hander allowed seven runs in five innings Thursday but did not get the decision in an 8-7 loss at San Francisco.

"I've got no explanation for you. It's pretty cut and dry," Wells' told the Cubs' official website. "I can't keep putting the team in a hole like that. It's not professional, it's not acceptable. Just chalk it up to a bad day and move on."

Wells has gone 0-3 with a 7.48 ERA in his last four starts. He allowed three runs and struck out seven in seven innings of a 3-1 loss in his only appearance against the Padres on May 23, 2009.

San Diego is 2-6 at Wrigley Field since the start of the 2008 season.
